Case Study: Local Housing Construction Site

A prestige development proved to be a logistical challenge…but RG Security came through with flying colours. Client Property developers in Hampshire Background The client specialises in prestige waterside projects. This gated development at one of the county’s most popular sailing locations was their largest to date. When completed, it would comprise 140 flats and houses built on the site of a disused dry-dock complex and overlooking a long-established yacht club. The client employed a talented team of architects and planners. There was no doubt that, on completion, the handsome dwellings with their sweeping curved fronts and graceful balconies would find a ready market. But, meanwhile, the site was proving to be a challenge. The location on a river gave every passing vessel a clear view into the works, so that the arrival of every piece of capital equipment could be noted. Worse, the fact that the dock complex had been disused for the better part of two decades meant that local youths, who had long since broken down the rusty chainlink, regarded it as common ground. Graffiti tags proliferated faster than they could be painted over, and the team who carried out the initial site clean-up reported nasty out-of-hours encounters. Solution The client’s head of project wasted no time. He drew up a shortlist of all the SIA-approved security companies in the area capable of standing up round-the-clock patrols. RG Security was one of the client’s first calls, and we were delighted to quote on the provision of 24-hour on-site monitoring via manned guarding services. We made that initial quote based on a detailed site survey that also enabled us to sketch out a cost-effective plan for new chainlink fencing around the entire perimeter of the site, and we consulted closely with the project manager in order to draw up a route plan that would take our two-officer patrols around a series of nominated checkpoints at 30-minute intervals. We were able to offer additional reassurance via automated check-ins keyed to ID badges. The client also asked us to liaise with their on-site facilities management team to make more detailed proposals for equipment security. We delivered a modified quote recommending the installation of high-security storage containers with robust locking systems, and dedicated proximity sensors for high-value plant and tools. We also recommended the addition of high-power motion-sensitive arclights to our initial chainlink plans. The client decided against our ‘Plan B’ infrared cameras, opting instead for a high-res digital CCTV system that relayed imagery direct to the Cloud. Outcome Being one of the most prestigious housing developments in the area, we’re extremely proud of our contribution to the project. We maintained a zero-damage, zero-theft record across the site. And, we’re pleased to note that the fenceline we established to separate the site from the local woods was co-opted by the client’s landscaping team in laying out the grounds of the complex.

We step up security for a growing supermarket chain

Client A supermarket chain selling convenience-store products, fresh produce from local growers and more Background The client is a supermarket with a twist. Founded by a group of former market gardeners from Kent, the chain sells convenience-store products alongside fresh, seasonal fruit and veg from local growers, with a growing sideline in UK-sourced meat and game. From small beginnings in Deal, the client grew quickly to six stores in Kent and East Sussex, and a 2019 IPO raised sufficient capital to open ‘second generation’ premises in Essex and Hampshire. The client’s future was looking good…until the chain’s founders noticed the extent of theft from stores in Southampton, Colchester and Harwich. The team were perplexed by the thefts, which focussed on high-ticket items like UK-reared grouse, pheasant and venison. Fortunately, the manager of the Southampton store had previous dealings with RG Security, and he recommended us to his bosses. In less than three days, an RG site team had visited the Southampton premises and prepared an initial report. The starting point was to analyse why things were going wrong at the Southampton store…and, by extension, at the other sites. RG’s team leader pointed out that the Southampton premises differed significantly from the more-established branches. It was a large building which had stood empty for some years following the failure of another supermarket chain. The long vacancy had happened in part because it had been designed for the high staffing levels typical of the 90s. Operated 2020-style by only four or five staff, it was a magnet to casual thieves. More to the point, it had been designed for direct unloading into its cold store. The drop-off zone with its raised delivery platform made things very easy for the lorry drivers…but also provided employees with an unmonitored route straight out to the car park. Solution RG’s report recommended 24-hour CCTV monitoring of the shop interior, the delivery area and the car park. It was an ambitious plan that would require both a video operator and an ongoing physical presence on-site…or, at least, throughout busy periods. Uniformed guards would be stationed at the entry/exit areas – with full backup from the RG’s well-respected alarm response service – and would also implement employee security checks via coded identity badges and a ‘clock on’ system. The client’s management okayed every element of the Southampton plan. Following a rushed installation of hardware and the rapid conversion of a staff cloakroom to a monitoring station, RG Security stood up its on-site team within three days of the get-go. Outcome The outcome at the Southampton store was a clear-cut, immediate 92% reduction in theft. The deterrent effect of uniformed guards was naturally important, but the client’s manager who had given our details to his bosses maintained that the most significant changes had been 24hr CCTV monitoring of the goods entrance and employee bag checks. To date, there has been no attempted break-ins…and RG’s security plan proved so successful that the happy client repeated the exercise at their Essex premises.

Response Alarms – What Are My Options When Securing My Site?

When safeguarding your property or business, response alarms are an essential tool in your security arsenal. These alarms are designed to do more than just sound off; they trigger a rapid and coordinated response to potential threats. In this blog, we’ll explore the world of response alarms, the options available, and how they can enhance your site’s security. 1. Intruder Alarms: Your First Line of Defence Intruder alarms are the cornerstone of any security system. These alarms are triggered by unauthorised access, such as breaking and entering. They can be discreet or visible, and some even come with features like motion sensors and glass-break detectors. When an intruder alarm is activated, it sends an immediate signal to a monitoring centre or designated responders. 2. Fire Alarms: Protecting Lives and Property Fire alarms are crucial for both residential and commercial properties. They detect smoke or elevated temperatures, signalling a potential fire hazard. Fire alarm systems can be integrated with response services to ensure that emergency responders are dispatched promptly to mitigate fire-related risks. 3. Panic Alarms: Instant Assistance in Emergencies Panic alarms provide a quick way to call for help during emergencies. These alarms are often discreetly placed and can be activated silently to summon assistance in situations like medical emergencies or security threats. Response teams can be on the scene swiftly, potentially preventing a crisis from escalating. 4. Duress Alarms: Protecting Your Personnel Duress alarms are designed to protect individuals in high-risk situations. They are often used in environments where employees may face threats or violence. When activated, these alarms immediately notify authorities or security teams, allowing for a rapid response to protect those in distress. 5. Video Verified Alarms: Adding Visual Confirmation Video verified alarms combine security cameras with alarm systems. When an alarm is triggered, video footage is sent to the monitoring centre for immediate review. This visual confirmation ensures that responders are dispatched only when a threat is confirmed, reducing false alarms and enhancing efficiency. 6. Access Control Alarms: Limiting Unauthorised Entry Access control alarms work in tandem with electronic access systems. They trigger an alert when unauthorised access attempts occur. This is particularly valuable for businesses and organisations with restricted areas, as it helps prevent security breaches. 7. Environmental Alarms: Protecting Against Hazards Environmental alarms monitor conditions like temperature, humidity, and flooding. They can alert you to potential environmental hazards, such as equipment malfunctions or water leaks. Early detection can prevent significant damage and costly repairs. Enhancing Your Security with Response Alarms When it comes to securing your site, response alarms are indispensable. They offer a proactive approach to security by quickly notifying authorities or responders in the event of a threat. Depending on your needs, you can choose from various alarm types to create a comprehensive security solution tailored to your specific requirements. Collaborative Security: How Facility Managers and Security Teams Can Work Together

In today’s dynamic and ever-evolving security landscape, collaboration is key to effectively safeguarding properties, assets, and people. Facility managers (FMs) and security teams play distinct but interconnected roles in ensuring the safety and security of a facility. When these two critical components work together seamlessly, the result is a robust security strategy that leaves no room for vulnerabilities. Whilst facility managers are responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of a facility. Their duties encompass everything from building maintenance, environmental controls, and energy management, to ensuring a comfortable and productive environment for occupants. Security teams, on the other hand, focus primarily on safeguarding the facility from external and internal threats. Their responsibilities include access control, surveillance, emergency response, and incident management. The Synergy of Collaboration Here’s how these two entities can work together to effectively enhance security: 1. Having shared objectives: The first step in collaboration is understanding that both facility managers and security teams share a common goal: ensuring the safety and security of the facility and its occupants. Establishing this shared objective creates a strong foundation for cooperation. 2. Risk assessment: Facility managers can provide valuable input into risk assessment. Their knowledge of the facility’s layout, vulnerabilities, and critical systems can help security teams identify potential weak points and develop mitigation strategies. 3. Integrated Systems: Collaboration often involves integrating various security and facility management systems. This includes access control systems, surveillance cameras, fire alarms, and environmental monitoring. By working together to manage and maintain these systems, FMs and security teams ensure they function optimally. 4. Emergency Planning: Facility managers and security teams should collaborate on emergency planning and drills. FMs can help identify evacuation routes, assembly points, and critical facility shutdown procedures, while security teams can ensure these plans are communicated and executed effectively. 5. Incident Response: In the event of an incident, whether it’s a security breach, a natural disaster, or a critical system failure, the coordinated response is crucial. Facility managers can play a role in damage assessment and restoration efforts, while security teams manage the immediate security concerns. 6. Training and Education: Collaboration extends to training and education. Facility managers can benefit from security training, while security teams can gain insights into the facility’s operational nuances. This cross-training enhances both sides’ ability to respond effectively to various situations. 7. Regular Communication: Open and regular communication between FMs and security teams is paramount. Sharing insights, updates, and concerns ensures that both sides are well-informed and can adapt their strategies as needed. A Stronger Security Partnership Collaborative security between facility managers and security teams isn’t just beneficial; it’s essential in today’s security landscape. When these two entities work together harmoniously, the result is a more secure and resilient facility. By sharing objectives, assessing risks, integrating systems, and coordinating responses, FMs and security teams create a security strategy that leaves no gaps and can adapt to evolving threats.
